melasma skin treatment

More specifically melasma or lentigo
The brown spots on our skin we move from an irregular distribution of melanin. Either this can result in melasma which is an uneven production of melanocytes causing light brown spots, or lentigines (age spots), which are an uneven accumulation of melanocytes in the epidermis resulting in brown spots.
The melanocytes, the cells are located in the basal cell layer of the skin. These cells control the production of melanin, which gives each person their coloring. The melanin production rate differs between each person being greater in dark skinned individuals.
Factors also external influence the production of melanin, which can cause brown spots:
- Sun exposure
- Certain drugs and chemicals
- Hormones – pregnancy, menopause, birth control pills
- Behind the health problems – Nerve disorders
- Acne
Melasma produces irregular, light brown spots that usually occur in the nose, cheeks, face and upper chest. The darker the skin, the spots are lighter than the surrounding skin. Melasma is common during pregnancy, menopause and women taking oral contraceptives. Sun exposure will cause brown spots worse.
Lentigines, also known as age or liver spots, are flat, light reddish brown spots that appear on the face, throat, chest, back, hands, back and shoulders. Lentigines usually appear on skin that is repeatedly exposed to sunlight. The ultraviolet sunlight causes overstimulation of the melanocyte cells in the skin. The cells clump together and appear as age spots.
Lentigines spots vary in size from small to a couple of inches wide. They occur most often in people with fair skin and can begin to be felt as early as the age of 30.
Although both produced melanin spots are harmless, they are unattractive to most people. So what gets rid of them?
Over the counter products that can be used to remove brown spots on the skin are:
- Bleaching (depigmentation) products include —
- Hydroquinone (used only on fair to light skin tones – possibly irritating)
- Kojic acid (an alternative for darker skin tones)
- Azelaic acid
- Arbutin
- Ellagic acid
- Retinoids (retinoic acid)
- Vitamin C (ascorbic acid)
- Alpha Hydroxy Acids
Discoloration products work by inhibiting the production of the enzyme tyrosinase, which in turn reduces melanin. Over time, the brown spots fade. Whitening products is not clear the skin beyond its' own natural color, so do not worry about going to the light.
Retinoids, vitamin C and fruit acids can gradually fade brown spots on their own. However, they are best used in conjunction with bleaching products, will improve the overall effectiveness of treatment.
Always use proper sun protection when using any of these ingredients. Your skin will be extremely sensitive to the sun. In addition, hydroquinone will be useless if do not use sunscreen.
Options that are available through professional skin care are:
- Laser Treatments (less damaging to the skin)
- Chemical face peels
- Freezing with liquid nitrogen (may cause staining white)

Melasma (also called chloasma) is a condition in which portions of the skin becomes darker than the surrounding skin. Doctors call this hyperpigmentation. Usually occurs on the face, especially in the forehead, cheeks and upper lip. The dark patches often appear on both sides of the face in a pattern almost identical. Dark patches of skin can be any color from dark brown tone. Rarely, these dark spots can appear in other Sun exposed body areas. Chinese herbs are often used in combinations to fight disease.
The herbal doctors have reported Chinese several successful applications of these herbal combinations. During observation on 53 patients receiving treatment with herbal remedy, 27 cases were judged as healing (complete recovery and symptom free), 20 cases other significant improvement, 6 cases other moderate improvement. Physicians judged the clinical efficacy to be good or excellent in 100%. See table below for details.
The characteristic most potent of Traditional Chinese Medicine is that you can easily combine multiple ingredients to form a recipe to suit the individual's specific needs.
Chinese Hawthorn (sanzha) for treating facial brown spots (melasma). The results are described for the treatment of 12 patients Shanzhen with melasma, which mainly affects the forehead and cheeks, and less on the nose and upper lip. Patients aged 23 to 45 years. Shorter duration of illness was 5 months and longest 12 years. Method: Grind 300g of dried raw Shanzhen into fine powder and reserve for later use. Wash your face with warm water and towel dry. Mix 5 g of powdered Shanzhen with an adequate amount of fresh egg white to form a paste and apply to the face to form a thin film. Let stand for 1 hour, during which time the face can be massaged to help the absorption of the herb. Do this once in the morning and evening. Sixty (60) applications are a course of treatment. Results: After treatment, the pigmentation disappeared in 6 patients, whose skin color has returned to normal, became lighter in 4 patients, and 2 did not respond. A case example was described by a 23 year old single woman with melasma on her cheeks, which had been treated unsuccessfully for 6 months and had begun to spread to the forehead and bridge of the nose. After 2 courses of treatment Shanzhen (120 applications; 2 months), patient's melasma was completely resolved.
In western medical practice, melasma is usually treated with bleaching agents such as hydroquinone, which is pretty tough. Hawthorn fruit Chinese has never been known to be toxic and is a common food and medicine. If that fails, probably will not hurt. You can buy at any store Shanzhen herbs Chinese, and probably many food markets in Chinatown. But be sure to get the dried raw kind (usually in twisted slices of 1-2 cm in diameter and 0.5 cm thick), not the Shanzhen candy that comes in thin sheets stacked 3-4 cm high and wrapped in paper. Shanzhen If the premium is not dry enough to grind, can be dried in oven at low heat until it is fragile.
